Love, Always

Joy is everywhere. (A loving reminder for people who are feeling the “post-holiday blues.”)

No more presents.

No more bells, ribbons or twinkling tree.

The wonderful guests have all gone home.

All that’s left are… cookie crumbs and depressing credit card statements. Ugh.

If you’re feeling the post-holiday blues, that’s quite common and understandable.

Many of my clients feel the doldrums after the holiday season has come and gone.

In the past? I have felt ‘em, too.

Here is what I’ve learned, and what I try to teach to others:

Happiness isn’t a feeling that’s connected to a special “date,” “party” or “place.”

It’s a state of being that you can create, all year long.

That’s the secret to lasting happiness:

Learning to find joy in everyday moments, no matter what’s going on around you.

Learning to find joy when things are festive and exciting, and when things are quiet… when you’re surrounded by people, and when you’re alone… when life is going great, and when it’s not.

Your post-holiday mission?

Find some joy, today.

Maybe you got a lovely email from a friend. Or found your cat lying in that perfect sunny spot on the carpet. Or had an exceptionally delicious cup of coffee. Or read a funny comic in the newspaper. Or shared a few moments reading a story to your child. Or maybe you spent fifteen minutes searching for your sunglasses (everywhere!) only to discover they were right on top of your head the whole time. (Hilarious!)

Joy is everywhere, in every moment.

It doesn’t require a big burst of holiday excitement, a trip to a magnificent vacation spot, or winning the lottery.

I suspect you already know this.

But sometimes, we need to be reminded of what we already know.

“And joy is everywhere;
It is in the Earth’s green covering of grass;
In the blue serenity of the Sky;
In the reckless exuberance of Spring;
In the severe abstinence of grey Winter;
In the Living flesh that animates our bodily frame;
In the perfect poise of the Human figure, noble and upright;
In Living;
In the exercise of all our powers;
In the acquisition of Knowledge;
In fighting evils…
Joy is there Everywhere.

Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel Prize Winner, Polymath, Poet

May today, tomorrow, and all of your days to come be filled with joy.

It is everywhere, and it is limitless… if you choose to take it in.
