Love, Always

Marriage // Love

An interesting question…

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”
—Jim Rohn

Have you ever held a newborn baby in your arms?

How did you hold that child?

I’m guessing you cradled the little one with tenderness, care, and reverence.

Your arms were gentle but firm, ensuring the child’s safety, pressed close to your heart.

If you were the parent of this child, and you were breastfeeding, I know you were watching what you ate (i.e., what you fed your baby). Alternatively, you were most likely giving your newborn the healthiest possible baby food. Only the best for your child. All natural, fresh, organic, if possible. Definitely no junk food or artificial nonsense!

You might also have whispered loving words, close to your child’s sweet face. “You are loved. You are safe. I will always take care of you.”

It is natural to give infants profound love and care. Their health and wellbeing is of the utmost importance. Their tiny, precious bodies are sacred, and we treat them accordingly.

And yet… many of us treat our own “grown up” bodies with carelessness, even neglect.

We don’t feed ourselves well, choosing low-quality foods over nutrient-rich, earth-grown options, or simply eating too much. We don’t keep ourselves hydrated properly. We skimp on sleep. Some people drink too much. Others say mean, hateful things to their reflections in the mirror. So many of us allow our stress levels to build and build until it’s all just too much.

So, here’s the question of the day:

How are you feeling in your body right now? Are you feeling vibrant, nourished and strong? Or is it time for a change? Time to start treating your body with the same level of nourishment and care that you might provide to a small child?

If you’d like to give your body some extra-special care, today, I invite you to treat yourself to my latest audio meditation… right here.

It’s called The “Feel Better” Meditation. 17 minutes of relaxation and healing to help you enjoy a more energized, focused, productive day. This meditation is especially good if you woke up feeling a little “blah” today. Enjoy to the fullest!

Take extra-special good care of your body this week. As Jim Rohn points out, it’s the only one you’ve got. And unlike investing in real estate or the stock market, investing in your health is one “personal investment” that always pays off, and that you will never, ever regret. :)

Love, always.

A Guidebook For Parents On How to Raise Happy, Successful Kids. IT STARTS WITH YOU, by Dr. Gelb.

“My daughter just won’t cooperate.”
“The tantrums have gotten out of control.”
“He promises to do his chores, but then he doesn’t.”
“She’s having trouble making friends at her new high school.”
“I’m trying everything I can think of… but I’m at my wit’s end!”

Sound familiar?

If you’re a parent, chances are you’ve uttered at least one of those statements during the past year—or something pretty similar.

Dr. Suzanne Gelb, a psychologist and life coach, who has worked with parents and families for many years, and also an attorney (currently inactive) who has handled family law cases, intimately understands your frustrations.

Year after year, moms, dads, and kids—from toddlers to teenagers—have stepped into Dr. Gelb’s offices, and she has heard stories about every crisis, melt-down, tantrum, and hair-pulling situation that you can imagine.

Three decades—and thousands of transformational success stories—into her career, Dr. Gelb has consolidated her immense knowledge into a new guidebook for parents:

IT STARTS WITH YOU.

This book does not outline a “revolutionary” or “ground-breaking” parenting philosophy. Rather, just the opposite. It’s a refreshingly simple guidebook on how to raise great kids by setting a great example that your kids naturally want to follow. As Dr. Gelb explains, you set the tone for your household. If your child is acting out, first, look towards yourself. IT STARTS WITH YOU urges parents to get back to basics—starting with your words, your actions, your role modeling; the messages that you knowingly (and unknowingly) feed to your child every day.

Cover-1

In this book, you’ll find:

—Relatable stories from parents and kids

—Tips on how to set age-appropriate rules and consequences for kids of all ages, including teenagers

—Worksheets to organize and track family chores and responsibilities

—Guidelines to help resolve dozens of tricky, uncomfortable scenarios (from public tantrums to curfew-breaking to texting at the dinner table to navigating major life events, like illness or divorce)

—Inspiration to heal and improve your own mind, body, and life—forgiving your own parents, releasing the past, becoming a stronger, more positive role model for your kids: a family leader who’s worthy of admiration and respect

Readers have called this book “game-changing” and “incredibly effective,” and the message rippling through the pages of IT STARTS WITH YOU is one of hope and empowerment:

It is never too late to become the person, parent, and role model that you want to be—and that your child needs and deserves.

Your child is looking to you & counting on you.

It all starts with you.

From parents:

“I always thought it was my kids’ fault for not cooperating. After reading this book, I realized that if I wanted them to cooperate, I needed to change how I was parenting. That’s exactly what happened (I made some changes, and then they did too). So remarkably simple… so incredibly effective. Wow!”

—Belinda K.

“I’ve read a lot of parenting books, but this one is totally unique. Dr. Gelb has captured the essence of effective parenting in this gem of a book and taken the mystery (and the struggle) out of raising, happy, fun-loving, well-adjusted kids. Beautifully written, practical, easy-to-read. Finally, peace at home… thanks to this book!”
—Mark B.

“The stories that Dr. Gelb shares at the beginning of the chapters in the book about the parents she’s worked with—and their successes—are so inspiring to a parent like me who is pulling her hair out, trying to get my kids to listen. The self-reflection exercises throughout the book are game-changers. I went from feeling frustrated and helpless, to empowered and pleased with the changes I see in my kids (and my whole family) as I implement the tools and solutions offered in this book.”
—Tracy L.

From kids:

“Mommy read this book and now we have all our rules on a chart on the fridge. I know what I am supposed to do and I don’t forget things. Also, we don’t yell as much. It’s awesome!”
—Ryan, 8

“Daddy doesn’t get mad and yell at everyone, and slam doors like he used to. Mommy says it’s because he read your parenting book. I am so happy, thank you.”
—Adam, 9

“My parents never used to listen to anything I had to say. It was always, “Because I said so.” I used to cry myself to sleep, and not want to get up in the mornings. Lately [after they read this book] they’ve been really listening to me when I have something to say. For the first time ever, I feel heard in my family, and like I belong, and that I want to be part of this family. It’s so different at home now… so much better.”
—Jenny, 12

Welcome Home—A Book about Releasing Addictions & Returning to Love. 25th Anniversary Edition, by Dr. Gelb

Addiction is hellish, lonely, and exhausting. Whether your “drug of choice” is food, alcohol, sex, narcotics, gambling, all, some, or none of the above, when you are caught in the grip of addiction it can be so difficult to heal and set yourself free. Difficult, but not impossible.

I am living proof. And so are people whom I’ve coached and counseled over the past 28 years.

As for me, today I am a successful psychologist and life coach with a bustling practice and a rich, fulfilling life. But in the past, I was a tormented person with a void inside of myself—a void that I tried to fill with food, with achievements, with awards, with praise, with all kinds of external experiences and substances. None of it worked. The temporary comfort that I found was always just that: temporary. The void would always return—along with the compulsive, self-sabotaging behaviors that hindered my life and that I loathed so much.

Through a process of self-discovery—supported by some incredible teachers and mentors—I began to learn that love, security, comfort, and peace cannot be found in a bottle, in a pint of ice cream, or in someone’s bed. These qualities must come from within. These are qualities that we can generate inside of ourselves—like the sun generating its own warmth and light—without requiring any external substances to do so.

Once I learned how to do this—once I learned how to become “emotionally self-reliant,” generating the feelings that I craved for myself, by myself—then I found—as did many of the people whom I subsequently coached and counseled—that our previous “drug of choice” no longer held power over us.

We found that our addictions and compulsions subsided. Like a true miracle, we felt at peace and at home within our own lives.

This is what my book, Welcome Home, is all about.

I originally wrote this book 25 years ago. In honor of its 25th anniversary, I am re-releasing the book with some updates and additions.

Welcome Home is written in a personal diary format (but it is not a replica of any actual, personal diary). I chose this diary format because it captures not only my personal struggle with addiction, my healing journey, my challenges and some of the lessons that I learned along the way, but it also reflects my years of professional experience in supporting others through the struggles and triumphs of releasing addictions. And as you read this book, you may feel like this could be your diary… your story. That was my intent—that the diary entries touch people who been gripped by addictions. Each entry is followed by a “self help suggestion”: a brief exercise that can be done at any time. You can read the book chronologically or flip around and soak in a passage that calls to you.

I hope that Welcome Home becomes a much-loved addition to your library—perhaps resting on your bedside table or on your desk, somewhere visible, serving as a daily reminder that with patience and courage, it is possible to learn how to become emotionally self-reliant: depending on ourselves, not external substances, to successfully handle life’s challenges, and to provide all of the love, happiness, and comfort that we could possibly desire.
